Capacitive touch screen technology relies on the capacitance of the human body. At the same time, resistive technology relies on pressure exerted on the touch panel, rather than relying on pressure like resistive technology. There are two types of capacitive touch screens: surface capacitive and projected capacitive.
Capacitive touchscreen panels must be touched with fingers, a special capacitive stylus, or gloves. This is because the panels are coated with a material that stores electrical charges. The change in capacitance indicates the location of the touch. This differs from resistive and surface wave panels, which can sense input from a finger or stylus.
When a capacitive panel is touched, it attracts a small amount of charge to the point of contact, becoming a functional capacitor. The position is found by measuring changes in the electrostatic field. In some designs, circuitry located at each corner of the panel calculates the charge and sends the information to the controller for processing. In a multi-touch screen, sensors are arranged in a grid to enable more complex input.
The best way to clean a capacitive touchscreen is with a soft cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol or a mild, non-abrasive soap and water solution. Using a dry cloth may damage the surface. However, a microfiber cloth will help remove fingerprints from the surface.
Follow these steps to clean your capacitive touch screen:
Dampen a soft or microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol or a mild, nonabrasive soap and water solution, and gently wipe the touchscreen clean.
Wipe the screen and edges dry.
Make sure the glass and screen edges are completely dry before using the device.
Currently, capacitive touch screen technology offers a number of key advantages:
High touch sensitivity and accuracy
Support multi-touch
Sharp and Vibrant Images
Can be used without a stylus
Reliability – Capacitive touch screens usually continue to work even if they are cracked or punctured
The proliferation of the technology confers a degree of future-proofing
